Vancouver mayor and board vote to purchase CNG buses
TransLink directors decided Wednesday to go “green” and buy a new fleet of buses fueled by CNG instead of diesel. Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell claimed diesel is “still an unclean fuel”, and plans to purchase at least 94 new CNG buses.

China stakes claim for global oil access
China’s aggressive search for oil is putting it in growing competition with the U.S., the world’s largest oil consumer, with some observers even warning of a possible showdown between the two economic giants. During the past two years, President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have taken oil executive trips to oil-rich countries from Algeria to Uzbekistan to seal major deals.

California Air Resources Board adopts on-board diagnostic requirement for big rigs
CARB has adopted a regulation that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from on-road heavy-duty trucks and buses by nearly 110 tons per day by 2020. The regulation requires engine manufacturers to install on-board diagnostic systems on heavy-duty engines beginning in 2010.

California to subsidize natural gas home refueling
Last week the state of California agreed to subsidize home natural gas refueling devices, which allow drivers to fill their fuel tanks with natural gas at home. Honda is the only company that sells natural-gas vehicles to individual consumers in the U.S.

SwRI develops low-emission natural gas truck engine
Southwest Research Institute, as part of the DOE’s Next Generation Natural Gas Vehicles Program, has developed a low-emissions, heavy-duty natural gas engine that more than meets the EPA’s 2010 emissions standards. The next-generation engine emits greatly reduced levels of oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter.

LAX awarded top honor in airport industry environmental achievement
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has been awarded the Airports Council International-North America Environmental Achievement Award for constructing the first retail hydrogen-fueling and generation at an airport. Currently, over 400 vehicle (more than half) of LAX’s fleet is comprised of alternative-fuel vehicles, including CNG and LNG-fueled vehicles, electric and hybrid models.

Local leaders urged to fight climate change
Former U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson urged mayors from across the nation to take the lead in fighting global warming at a Salt Lake City conference on Monday. The cities’ efforts will include reducing dependence on fossil fuels by accelerating development of technologies such as wind and solar energy, efficient motor vehicles and biofuels.

Detroit gung-ho for hybrids
Detroit auto executives underestimated demand for hybrid model vehicles and are now struggling to catch up. Automakers sold 56,440 hybrids in the U.S. the first four months of the year, up 146% from the same period last year.

Honda Civic GX leader in AFV benefits
The Honda Civic GX and Phill station offer the cleanest transportation option on the market, as well as huge fuel cost savings and HOV access. CNG is also far cleaner than liquid petroleum and is produced domestically with supplies projected to last for decades. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy ranks the GX the greenest vehicle on the market.

Indonesia to cut oil by 50%
Indonesia plans to halve domestic crude oil consumption by 50% and double LNG and coal output by 2015. Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Aburizal Barkrie claims, “The government won’t any longer use energy (sources) that are expensive and not widely available in Indonesia and (instead) we’re going to export more oil”.

Investing in CNG & LNG in the Philippines
American banks and funding agencies are considering substantial investments for the country’s planned projects in the downstream natural gas industry, primarily LNG and CNG facilities intended for the transportation sector.

Reducing oil dependency priority for Americans
A nationwide telephone survey of a 1,004 adults found that reducing dependence on foreign oil is a top priority for Americans. When asked what the most important goal of U.S. energy policy should be, 43% said “reducing dependence on foreign oil”, while 65% believe that the U.S. government should make a major funding commitment to transform the auto industry from a gasoline-based system to a hydrogen-based system.

Houston companies choose LNG
Sysco Corporation has converted 27 of its tractor-trailers in the Houston area from diesel to LNG, and ordered 42 more. H-E-B has also converted 62 of its local tractor-trailers, more than half its fleet, to LNG.

China may fuel global risk
China currently consumes 40% as much energy as the U.S., however the U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that over the next 20 years, that ratio will rise to 66%. China’s rapid growth and increasing fuel consumption is cited as attributing to higher oil prices in the U.S.

Cummins Westport delivers 103 CNG engines
Cummins Westport Inc. has announced that 103 more of its C Gas Plus natural gas engines are powering transit buses for The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District. San Diego Transit now has 143 buses powered by CWI C Gas Plus engines.

Energy plans examined
Mary O’Driscoll of Environment and Energy Daily discussed some of the key differences between the House and the Senate’s versions of the energy bill. Central differences O’Driscoll noted were the varying requirements regarding renewable fuels and the issue of drilling for oil supplies in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge.

Redondo Beach family to evaluate hydrogen car
A new Honda FCX hydrogen-powered passenger car has been leased to the first private customer. The Spallino family of Redondo Beach will use the car for all of their routine driving and report on the car’s performance to Honda. The Spallinos were selected for the test partly because they already own a Honda Civic GX powered by natural gas and are accustomed to alternative fueling stations.

CNG buses launched in the Philippines
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has launched the first commercial bus using indigenous CNG. At least 200 additional CNG buses will be operational on the Manila-Batangas route starting in August. With the cost of CNG running about 50% less than diesel, the lower fuel costs are expected to help lower the passenger fare.

Hahn recommends Villaraigosa take action on LA Port pollution
As one of his last actions in office, Mayor James K. Hahn recommends that his successor, Antonio Villaraigosa, continue the effort to reduce pollution at the Port of Los Angeles. The port’s task force, created by Hahn, has submitted a report with findings and recommendations to reduce port pollution.

New CNG vehicles for Baton Rouge
Mayor-President Kip Holden announced the purchase of five CNG-fueled vehicles, claiming an NGV to be, “the cleanest-burning vehicle on earth”, utilizing a Clean Cities' grant for the purchase.

Natural gas discovery in India
The Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation has made India’s biggest natural gas discovery in the Krishna-Godavari basin off the Andhra coast, estimated at $50 billion. The discovery will provide vital fuel for power generation, transportation, industrial development and domestic needs. It will also make small and medium-scale industries competitive and provide employment opportunities.
