New Stanford study supports hydrogen
A team of scientists at Stanford has concluded that converting all U.S. vehicles to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles could prevent 3,700 to 6,400 deaths attributable to pollution each year. The study also shows that the production sources of hydrogen with the least amount of environmental hazards are natural gas and wind power.

Boone Pickens forecasts higher oil costs
Boone Pickens has forecasted a continuing increase in oil costs. His outlook stems from the belief that a world oil production peak is near and that supplies will remain tight. Pickens also believes these costs will remain high until fossil fuel consumption tapers off and alternatives become more popular.

Australian Government cars to use ethanol
The New South Wales Government vehicle fleet will begin incorporating ethanol fuel into its fleet of 24,500 cars and light commercial vehicles. NSW Premier Bob Carr announced the decision, claiming “alternative fuels will be increasingly important as we move away from reliance on fossil fuels and establish a more diverse and secure energy supply”.

Peru runs first natural gas train
Peru has unveiled the world’s first train powered by CNG. The diesel engine on the cargo and passenger train was replaced with one to run on CNG, taking advantage of the Andean nation’s substantial Camisea gas reserves. The company also plans to convert all eight engines in its fleet to CNG over the next seven months.

Senate OKs inventory of coastal areas
The Senate voted Tuesday to conduct an inventory of offshore oil and gas resources, including areas that are currently off-limits to drilling. This surveying could be the first steps to removing some of the no-drilling bans along certain coastline areas.

New Yale study finds imported oil a problem among the public
A new Yale University research survey of 1,000 adults shows a vast majority of the pubic wants to see government action to develop new “clean” energy sources. The study found 92% claim dependence on imported oil is a serious problem.

Senate gives ethanol an added boost
The Senate voted Wednesday to double the amount of ethanol that must be added to the nation’s gas supply by 2012, bringing the new required amount to 8 billion gallons.

Natural gas expansion planned for U.S.
With forecasts that natural gas will overtake coal and oil as the leading fossil fuel in the world by 2025, the Bush administration is urging the creation of a global market for natural gas, with the United States at its center. New LNG terminals are proposed in many locations over the U.S. to set the foundation of a large scale importing market, intended to ease today’s high cost of importing foreign oil.

Alternative fuels making strides in China
With China’s transportation market on a sharp and steady increase, the country’s alternative fuel market is expected to increase from $75 million in 2002 to $1.8 billion by 2008. The government’s goals to improve the air quality in major Chinese cities and reduce its dependence on foreign oil are being accomplished through utilizing CNG, LNG, hybrid technology and other sources of alternative fueling.

Shell opens first CNG facility in Tabangao, Philippines
The first CNG refueling station in Tabangao has opened and will begin serving an initial fleet of 200 CNG public utility buses. The station is part of a mother-daughter fueling arrangement, with CNG being pumped into the mother station in Tabangao and transported by land to the daughter retail station in Binan, Langua.

Strong growth ahead for natural gas fuel
Energy sector consultants Wood Mackenzie presented industry outlook papers at the 2005 Deutsche Bank Energy Seminar. The papers concluded that natural gas will be the fuel of the 21st century and that LNG markets will double over the next decade.

Cargill to build biodiesel plant in Iowa
Cargill will begin construction this summer on a new biodiesel production plant in Iowa Falls to take advantage of the growing alternative fuels market. The plant will make 37.5 million gallons of biodiesel and 30 million pounds of glycerin a year from soybean oil.

NGV World Fair demonstrates progress
The World Fair of Natural Gas and Hydrogen Vehicles took place in Bolzano, Italy June 10th-12th. The fair ran concurrently with the ENGVA conference and demonstrated the close linkage between NGVs and hydrogen vehicles, providing evidence that NGVs are a viable path to hydrogen.

EPA won’t give a pass on fuel additive
EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson rejected a request Thursday from California and two other states to waive requirements that gasoline contain an additive to reduce air pollution. Under this requirement, California has blended ethanol with gasoline, raising the cost and reportedly increasing air pollution in the summer.

Lambert Airport expands NGV fleet
Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has successfully completed the bid proposal package for 16 new CNG shuttle vehicles. The new vehicles are part of the airport’s “Super Park” CNG Shuttle Program.

Pakistan booming with NGVs
Pakistan has become the third largest user of CNG in the world with approximately 700,000 vehicles converted to CNG as of March. The country also boasts 700 CNG stations and 200 more under construction.

New hybrid bucket truck hits the road
ComEd will be one of the first utility companies in the nation to test two new diesel-electric hybrid bucket trucks. The hybrid truck allows the operator to shut off the diesel engine and operate the bucket on an electric motor for up to two hours, which results in approximately two-thirds of the overall fuel savings.

EPA names Long Beach Port an ‘Environmental Hero’
The Port of Long Beach received an award from the EPA for promoting clean air and water through the port’s installation of devices to reduce diesel emissions from yard equipment, a LNG demonstration project, and plans for ships to plug into onshore electric power while in port.

Norway’s Hydrogen Highway gets funding
NOK 50 Million was announced for testing alternative fuels and environmentally friendly technology. Approximately NOK 30 million of the funding will go to the Hydro-led HyNor project, which is a planned hydrogen highway between Oslo and Stavanger.
