Mission Statement
Balancing Our Energy Resources
CONSENSEUS aims for agreement among competing fuels and technologies to attain a common goal — the highest and best use of energy resources for transportation in North America.
We seek to balance the use of petroleum and alternative fuels in harmony to achieve cleaner air, a healthier environment and energy security with reduced dependence upon imported petroleum.
- Our main energy resources and technologies for transportation are petroleum (diesel and gasoline), natural gas (CNG and LNG), ethanol, biodiesel, hybrid and — over the long term — hydrogen.
- All fuels and technologies should be judged based upon their highest and best uses, making an equitable, honest and fair assessment of performance, economics, and health and environmental impact.
- We will continue to use gasoline and diesel predominantly for transportation into the future. We encourage and support hybrid technology, particularly for consumer and other light-duty vehicles.
- We will increase the use of alternative fuels significantly, particularly natural gas and ethanol, employing them where they fit best by identifying the best applications for each energy resource, as well as the benefits and challenges each represents.
- Natural gas is a clean, safe and effective fuel for transportation, particularly heavy-duty trucks and buses, and is available now.
- Natural gas/hydrogen (85/15) mixtures are nearly as effective as pure hydrogen fuel, reducing emissions to near zero, and are available using today’s natural gas transportation technology — while pure hydrogen technology is 20 years or more away from practical implementation.
- Natural gas is the bridge to hydrogen for transportation in the future, providing the most effective feedstock to produce hydrogen and an efficient fueling infrastructure.
